A Practical Reference: Sugar Names to Know

The list below covers the most commonly encountered forms of added sugar, grouped by type. Ingredients are listed alphabetically within each group for easy lookup.

Cane sugar / cane juice

Sucrose derived from sugarcane. Evaporated cane juice, raw cane sugar, and turbinado sugar are all forms of this. Despite sounding less processed, they function the same way in the body as refined white sugar.

High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS)

A liquid sweetener made by converting some of the glucose in corn syrup into fructose. It is commonly used in sodas, condiments, and baked goods. HFCS-55 and HFCS-42 are the two most common commercial varieties.

Corn syrup / corn syrup solids

A thick syrup derived from corn starch containing mostly glucose. The dried, powdered form is called corn syrup solids, often found in coffee creamers and dry mixes.

Dextrose

Another name for glucose, the simplest form of sugar. It is derived from corn or wheat and is used widely in processed foods, sports drinks, and some medications.

Fructose

A simple sugar found naturally in fruit but also added to foods in isolated form. When consumed in excess as an added ingredient, it is metabolized primarily in the liver.

Maltose

A sugar formed from two glucose molecules, produced during the breakdown of starch. It is found in malted grains and malted products, and is added to some cereals and beverages.

Agave nectar / agave syrup

A liquid sweetener derived from the agave plant. Despite a health-food reputation, it is high in fructose — often higher than table sugar — and counts as added sugar.

Honey

A natural sweetener composed primarily of fructose and glucose. When added to processed foods, it is categorized as added sugar and contributes calories just as refined sugars do.

Molasses

A thick syrup byproduct of sugar refining. It retains some minerals (like iron and calcium), but is still classified as added sugar when included in ingredient lists.

Malt syrup / barley malt

A sweetener made from sprouted barley. It has a distinctive flavor and is used in baked goods and some beverages. Malt extract is a related term you may also encounter.

Rice syrup / brown rice syrup

A sweetener produced by breaking down rice starch into sugars. Often marketed as a natural alternative, it is composed mostly of glucose and maltose and is classified as added sugar.

Coconut sugar / palm sugar

Sugars derived from coconut or palm sap. They contain trace minerals and have a lower glycemic index than white sugar, but are still added sugars and should be accounted for accordingly.

Spotting sugar by position: Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. If any form of sugar appears among the first three ingredients, the product contains a significant amount. Watch also for multiple sugar types listed separately — a tactic that keeps each one lower on the list while the combined total remains high.
