Getting your household online involves two separate pieces of hardware that are often confused with each other: a modem and a router.
The modem is the device your internet service provider (ISP) installs or ships to you. It translates the internet signal coming in through your coaxial cable, phone line, or fiber connection into a form your home equipment can use. The router takes that signal and shares it wirelessly — as Wi-Fi — with every phone, laptop, and smart TV in your home.
Many ISPs now supply a single combo unit called a gateway that handles both jobs. If you received one device from your ISP and it has both ethernet ports and a Wi-Fi antenna, you likely already have a gateway. If you have two separate boxes, one is the modem and one is the router.

If your ISP provided a single all-in-one gateway device, you only need to connect it to the wall outlet and your cable or fiber connection — no separate router cable is required. Networking has its own vocabulary, and a few terms come up immediately when you are setting things up for the first time.
SSID
The name of your Wi-Fi network — the one you see when you search for available connections on your phone or laptop. You set this yourself in your router's settings.
Bandwidth
The maximum amount of data your internet connection can carry at one time, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Higher bandwidth means more devices can stream or download simultaneously without slowing each other down.
IP Address
A unique numerical label assigned to each device on a network, like a street address for data. Your router assigns one automatically to each device that connects.
WPA2 / WPA3
Security protocols that encrypt the data traveling over your Wi-Fi. WPA3 is the newest and strongest standard; WPA2 is still widely used and considered secure for most households.
DHCP
A system your router uses to automatically assign an IP address to every device that joins the network. It handles this invisibly so you do not have to configure each device manually.
Firmware
The built-in software that runs your router. Manufacturers release firmware updates to fix bugs and patch security vulnerabilities, similar to software updates on a phone.

Setting Up Your Network for the First Time
Most home network setups follow the same sequence. Work through these steps in order and you will typically be online within 30 minutes.
- Connect the modem first. Plug it into your cable or phone outlet, then connect it to a power source. Wait for its status lights to stabilize — this usually takes 1–3 minutes.
- Connect the router to the modem. Use an ethernet cable (usually included) to link the modem's output port to the router's WAN or internet port. Power on the router.
- Access the router's settings page. From a device connected via ethernet cable, open a browser and type the router's default IP address — commonly
192.168.1.1or192.168.0.1— into the address bar. The default address and login credentials are printed on a label on the router itself. - Change the default admin password. The factory password is publicly known and must be changed before you do anything else.
- Set your SSID and Wi-Fi password. Choose a network name that does not reveal your address or ISP. Create a password of at least 12 characters mixing letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Select WPA3 or WPA2 encryption. This setting is in your router's wireless security section. It ensures your traffic cannot be easily intercepted.
ISP-Provided Gateways May Limit Your Options
Some ISPs lock down the settings on their supplied gateway devices, preventing you from changing certain options like the DNS server or enabling advanced firewall rules. If you find your gateway's admin panel has limited controls, contact your ISP or ask about using your own compatible router instead.
Improving Coverage and Speed
Once your network is running, you may notice that the signal is weak in certain rooms. Several practical adjustments can help before you consider buying additional hardware.
- Reposition the router. Centrally locating your router — ideally elevated on a shelf — reduces the distance signal must travel to reach most areas of your home.
- Switch frequency bands. Modern routers broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The 5 GHz band is faster at close range; the 2.4 GHz band travels farther through walls. Connect speed-sensitive devices like streaming sticks to 5 GHz and phones or tablets that roam to 2.4 GHz.
- Consider a mesh system. A mesh network uses multiple access points that work together as a single network, eliminating dead zones in larger homes without requiring you to manually switch between different SSIDs as you move around.
- Use a range extender cautiously. A Wi-Fi extender can fill a specific dead zone at lower cost, but it typically creates a separate network name and can reduce overall speeds if not configured carefully.
Keeping Your Network Safe
A home network is only as secure as its weakest setting. These foundational habits significantly reduce the chance of unauthorized access.
- Update your router's firmware. Manufacturers release firmware updates that patch security vulnerabilities. Check for updates in your router's admin panel every few months, or enable automatic updates if your router supports them.
- Create a guest network. Most modern routers let you create a separate guest Wi-Fi network. Put smart home devices and visitors on the guest network to keep them isolated from computers and phones holding personal data.
- Audit connected devices periodically. Your router's admin panel shows a list of every device on your network. If you see something unfamiliar, change your Wi-Fi password immediately.
- Disable remote management. Unless you specifically need to access your router's settings from outside your home, this feature should be turned off.

Never Leave Default Router Credentials in Place
Router manufacturers use the same default admin usernames and passwords across thousands of units, and these are publicly listed online. Leaving the defaults unchanged means anyone who connects to your network — or attempts to access your router remotely — could potentially change your settings. Always update both the admin password and the Wi-Fi password before using your network.
