Core Terms: The Ones You'll Encounter Every Day

These are the definitions that come up most often — whether you're calling your ISP, reading a router manual, or comparing internet plans.

Modem

A device that connects your home to your internet service provider (ISP) by translating the signal from the provider's infrastructure into a format your home devices can use. Most ISPs supply or rent one when you sign up for service.

Router

A device that distributes the internet connection from your modem to multiple devices — either wirelessly (Wi-Fi) or through ethernet cables. It manages the flow of data between your devices and the internet.

Bandwidth

The maximum amount of data that can travel through your connection at one time, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). Higher bandwidth supports more simultaneous heavy users.

Latency

The time it takes for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Low latency is critical for video calls and online gaming; high latency causes noticeable lag.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. A system your router uses to automatically assign a local IP address to every device that joins your network, so devices don't need to be configured manually.

IP Address

A numerical label that identifies a device on a network, similar to a mailing address. Your router assigns private IP addresses internally; your ISP assigns a public IP address that identifies your household to the internet.

SSID

Service Set Identifier — the name of your Wi-Fi network as it appears when you search for available connections on a phone or laptop. You set this in your router's settings.

DNS

Domain Name System. A directory service that translates human-readable website addresses (like example.com) into the numerical IP addresses computers use to find servers. Your ISP provides a DNS server by default, but you can configure an alternative.

Ethernet

A wired networking standard that connects devices to a router using physical cables. Ethernet typically delivers faster speeds and more consistent performance than Wi-Fi, with less susceptibility to interference.

Mesh Network

A system of multiple router nodes placed around a home that work together to create a single, unified Wi-Fi network. Mesh systems eliminate dead zones more effectively than a single router in a large or multi-story home.

ISP

Internet Service Provider — the company that supplies your household's internet connection, such as a cable, fiber, or satellite provider.

NAT

Network Address Translation. A process routers use to allow multiple devices on your home network to share a single public IP address when communicating with the internet.
